Left atrial volume assessment by area-length method compared to multislice volumetric method using cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging

چکیده
Background Left atrial (LA) size is a strong predictor of cardiovascular events in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and a variety of other cardiovascular diseases. Left atrial volume (LAV) measurement is the preferred method for assessment of LA size. The most widely used technique for LAV assessment is the area-length (AL) method using 2D echocardiography. Studies have shown that AL method by echocardiography significantly underestimates LAV when compared with CMR using multislice volumetric (MSV) method. However, MSV method is time consuming due to increased acquisition and analysis time. We sought to compare LAV assessment by CMR using the more rapid AL method with MSV method.

Comparison of two methods of right atrial volume assessment using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging: area-length method versus multislice volumetric method
Background Right atrial (RA) volume evaluation is not as well characterized as left atrial (LA) volume assessment. RA volumes are most accurately assessed by the multislice volumetric (MSV) method; however, this method is time consuming requiring manual tracing of RA endocardial borders over several slices. The area-length (AL) method can also be used to estimate RA volume. Although well establ...
متن کاملComparison of area-length method by echocardiography versus full volume quantification by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging for the assessment of left atrial volume
Background Left atrial (LA) size is a known predictor of adverse cardiovascular events. Echocardiography is the modality of choice for the evaluation of atrial size however cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) remains the gold standard for cardiac chamber volume quantification. We sought to compare atrial volume assessment using the biplane area-length method by echocardiography with full v...
متن کاملAssessment of left atrial volumes at 1.5 Tesla and 3 Tesla using FLASH and SSFP cine imaging.
PURPOSE To investigate left atrial volumes and function and their variability in healthy volunteers using steady state free precession (SSFP) and fast low angle shot (FLASH) sequences at both 1.5 and 3 T using both the short-axis and biplane area-length methods. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ten healthy volunteers underwent CMR at both 1.5 and 3 Tesla. The biplane area-length method utilized volumes ...
متن کاملAssessment of left atrial volumes in sinus rhythm and atrial fibrillation using the biplane area-length method and cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging with TrueFISP.
OBJECTIVES To determine whether the biplane area-length method can be used for the evaluation of left atrial volumes and ejection fraction with cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) by TrueFISP in normal subjects and patients with atrial fibrillation. BACKGROUND Atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia in elderly patients. Left atrial size and volumes play an important role...
متن کاملQuantification of left atrial volume using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging: comparison of left atrial volume index measurements using the Simpson's and bi-plane area-length methods
Background Increased left atrial volume index (LAVI) has been shown to be an independent predictor of hard cardiovascular events. It can be determined by calculating left atrial (LA) volume through the use of either Simpson’s method or area-length method and indexing it to body surface area (BSA). Although there is no standardized method of calculating LA volume using Cardiac Magnetic Resonance...
